Helpful Tips On Florida’s New Progress Monitoring System

By: John Carvelli, Carvelli and Associates Academic Consulting

On July 1, 2022, Florida Senate Bill (SB) 1048 opened the door to new student assessment procedures in all public charter schools and school district schools. In addition to changing the testing format to Progress Monitoring (PM) assessments 1, 2, and 3 for Reading (ELA) and Math throughout the school year, S.B. 1048 spells out specific requirements for parent notification and involvement as well as teacher and student test results reporting. As part of the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) program, the goal of PM 1,2, and 3 is to assess the knowledge levels of student learning at the beginning, middle, and end of a school year. This new initiative places Florida’s education system at the forefront of progress monitoring and undoubtedly will lead to higher levels of student achievement. Some tips for success on PM 1,2, and 3 – ensure that classroom instruction is aligned with Florida’s educational standards, accurate academic feedback is given to students, teachers, and parents after PM 1 and 2 assessments, and regularly check the Florida Department of Education (DOE) website at Florida Statewide Assessments Portal (flfast.org). The DOE has been committed to helping teachers and schools by providing practice tests, sample test materials, and other resources. Additionally, work with students to build confidence in their academic skills and treat PM 1 and 2 as simulated runs for the PM 3 final assessment, which replaces the former FSA Reading and Math assessments.
