Charter Principal, Florida A&M Hall of Famer Honored
Tallahassee, FL — Donyale Ferguson McGhee, a principal at Somerset Preparatory of North Lauderdale, is being honored by her alma mater, Florida A&M. Already in the school’s Hall of Fame for her accomplishments on the school’s basketball team, now a plaque with her image will be placed in the Al Lawson Multipurpose Center. The recognition took place on September 15, 2019 at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.
“Wow God is so amazing!,” said McGhee. “In 2005, I was listed on seven Florida A&M career Top 10 categories, including free throws made (1st, 403); free throw attempts (1st, 762); field goal attempts (5th, 1,287); steals (6th, 252); scoring (6th with 1,369 points); assists (7th, with 371); and field goals made (8th, 513). Dreams do come true and I am a living witness! Thank you to my beautiful mama and my family because without you all none of this would have been possible for me.”
As the principal of a Title 1 K-12 Somerset Academy in Broward County, Mrs. McGhee has lifted the school’s academic performance and created a culture of honor, respect, and endless possibilities. She developed mentoring programs to encourage students to explore career and college options, started a 5000 Role Model club on campus, and help lead the girls basketball team to two state championships.
