Applying to be a Principal? Fellows Get Tips to Prove They’re Right for the Job

January 2024 — The School Leaders Fellowship is developing a robust pipeline of strong, effective, and visionary charter school leader.  The 6-month program covers the Florida Principals Standards and comprehensively explores charter school operations, and invites a select group of veteran charter school leaders and field experts with real-world experience in operations, budget, leadership, and K12 education to connect with the Fellows in a variety of ways.

From guest lecturers to leading mock interview sessions, the field experts and veteran charter school principals bring textbook theory to life. “Our goal is to equip Fellows with the tools they’ll need to be successful leaders,” explains Leicha SanMiguel, program director. Those tools are continuously reviewed and refreshed to better support participants and the evolving landscape of K12 education.. This year, mock interview sessions were added to the program. A committee of experienced school leaders contributed to the creating of the program format and questions the participants would be asked.  Going through a mock interview for a leadership position helped prepare Fellows to develop interview strategies and build the confidence to communicate their strengths and skills. Veteran charter school leaders took on the interviewers’ role, providing Fellows with support, constructive feedback, guidance, and recommendations. “I am eternally grateful for the opportunity – there is much that I realized and learned about the process and myself, as well as regarding what I need to do to prepare for a potential interview in the future,” said Gloriya Lasa, School Leaders Fellow, Class of 2024.

Fellowship candidates are individuals currently working at a public charter school who are new to charter school leadership or hope to become a principal one day.  The School Leaders Fellowship was created by the lorida Charter School Alliance with a grants from the  Florida Department of Education through the U.S. Department of Education’s CSP. Since its inception in 2022, 42 current and future charter school principals have participated in the program,
