In December 2019, the Florida Charter School Alliance (FCSA) hosted a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Forum in Palm Beach County. The event brought together charter high school principals and Florida Department of Education representatives – including Henry R. Mack, III, Chancellor, Division of Career and Adult Education – for a frank discussion about career and technical education opportunities and internships for students attending public charter schools.
In January 2020, the FCSA took a group of charter high school principals on a tour of the Braman Automotive Training Center (BATC) in Miami. A long-time vision of Norman Braman, founder, and CEO, of Braman Motors, the BATC offers a tuition-free innovative post-high school vocational program for South Florida’s inner-city students. Our group met BATC students, toured the state-of-the-art repair shop and classroom, and learned more about the program. In addition to providing the required 1,800 hours of curriculum in an on-site classroom with an ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) accredited instructor, students in the BATC program have the opportunity to have hands-on experience at the dealership and earn income through a paid internship.
Charter high schools interested in the program can contact Lynn@flcharteralliance.org for more information.
