Duval Charter School’s low-income student population receives an ‘A’ grade from the State

Jacksonville, FL, July 11, 2019 – The Florida Department of Education school grades have been released, and for the 2018-2019 school year, Wayman Academy of the Arts is an A school. This is the fourth consecutive year that Wayman Academy of the Arts (WAA) has received either an ‘A’ or’ ‘B’ grade. One hundred percent (100%) of Its student population is designated as being economically disadvantaged, and ninety-eight percent (98%) are minorities.
WAA principal Simiran Bakshi says “It’s our kids! Great schools cannot exist without great group of students. Our school is a perfect example of school community respecting each other, supporting each other, and helping each other to succeed. Passion for excellence is a driving force each and every day for students and staff. Our teachers push themselves and their students to be the best. Failure is not an option for them or the students. We teach our students to keep moving on up!”
“For over 20 years, we have been working and striving to develop a high quality academic program for parents and families in some of Jacksonville’s most challenged communities. Our students consistently outperform their peers in the surrounding schools and beyond. This proves that all of our children can learn if given the right nurturing and environment. We are closing the achievement gap one student at a time.”, said WAA board chairman Dr. Mark Griffin.
While students are on summer break, the administration and staff are preparing to enter the school’s 20th year as a state-designated “High Performing Charter School.” Almost all of the teachers are returning, because of their commitment to the mission and purpose of the school.
Having missed an “A” grade by just a few points the previous year, Wayman Academy is determined to maintain this “A” grade for years to come.
