Memo from the Florida Department of Education – June 28, 2019 – The 2019 Florida Legislature passed House Bill (HB) 7071, and Governor Ron DeSantis signed the bill into law on June 24, 2019. The bill makes several changes that may affect master schedule planning for the 2019-2020 school year.
HB 7071 amends section 1003.4282, Florida Statutes (F.S.), effective July 1, 2019, and states that beginning with the 2019-2020 school year, districts must offer a financial literacy course consisting of at least one half-credit as an elective.
In addition, HB 7071 amends section 1003.4282, F.S., to update the social studies graduation requirement to include the following three credits:
- One credit United States History;
- One credit World History;
- One-half credit in United States Government; and
- One-half credit in Economics.
HB 7071 amends section 1003.4285, F.S., to allow a student to meet the mathematics requirement for the scholar designation if they earn one credit in Algebra II or an equally rigorous course, and one credit in Statistics or an equally rigorous course. Courses equally rigorous to Algebra II include: Algebra II Honors, Advanced Topics in Mathematics, IB Middle Years Program Algebra II – click the link to the memo below for a complete list.
The law also requires students to complete a Career and Education Planning course in order to meet middle grades promotion. At a minimum, the course must be internet-based, customizable to each student and include research-based assessments to assist students in determining educational and career options and goals.
