The majority of those present at the Somerset Academy South Homestead’s tribute to September 11 weren’t even born when terrorists attacked the country.

Still waves and waves of children presented patriotic performances to the two dozen first responders and military members who showed up for the festive ceremony.

Many of those first responders were parents.

“We have so many students that their parents are either
fire fighters , police officers or in the military,” said Principal Morales to the News Leader. “I think it’s just important to recognize them, especially on a day like today, September 11.”

The day started with students carrying the flag through a tunnel made of local fire fighters. After raising the flag, it was lowered to remember the fallen.

After that solemn moment the festivities turned upbeat as children sang songs and recited passages to the best of their cute abilities. Every grade level had a distinctly different presentation as police, fire fighters and service men and women looked on.

Later the celebration went to the court yard where the children each planted flags to remember the innocent people lost on that tragic day.

“I thought it was amazing,” said Morales. “We had so many men and women here that fight for our country everyday.”
