The School Leaders Fellowship connects experienced charter school leaders and field experts with future principals to broaden their professional network and learn from the best,
November 2023 –= When the FCSA team created the School Leaders Fellowship, we aimed to develop a pipeline of well-prepared, high-quality charter school principals. Our curriculum included Florida Education Leadership Standards, but we also wanted to include exceptional charter school principals and field experts as guest presenters who would share best practices and lessons they’d learned with soon-to-be leaders. This formula has been a great success.
Recent sessions for Cohort 3/Class of 2024 School Leaders Fellowship included the following presentations:
- Creating a Successful Learning Environment presented by Alex Prieto, Principal, Somerset Academy Miramar Elementary and Somerset Academy Miramar Middle School. Under Ms. Prieto’s leadership, her campus has earned two National Blue Ribbon Awards.
- Understanding Enrollment and Charter School Contracts presented by Maria Alba, Chief Academic Officer, Charter School Solutions. A former Principal of South Point Scholars Academy in Homestead, Ms. Alba also served as vice principal at Miami Community Charter School. In 2021, Governor DeSantis appointed her to the Council for Early Grade Success.
- Best Practices for Board Governance presented by Christine Mentis, Governance Board Program Director at the Charter Support Unit.
- Charter School Finance and Budgeting presented by Dr. Andy Binns. Retired in 2011 as the Director of FTE and student Reporting for the Palm Beach County School District, Dr. Binns currently consults with charter schools across the state addressing their student scheduling and data reporting needs and has been teaching finance/budgeting courses over the last 20 years for several universities as well as developed curricula for courses at the Graduate and Doctoral levels.
- Weathering the Storm: Navigating Controversies in the School Environment presentation prepared by Lynn Norman-Teck, executive director, FCSA, and Braxton Padgett, attorney, Arnold Law, LLC.

Dr. Eunice Casey, Director of School Leadership and Support Services, EdisonLearning
Jay Drag, Vice President of Operations (and former principal), Charter School Associates,
