Hillsborough County, FL – September 2017 – Lee Elementary Magnet School of World Studies and Technology, a district-run school in Hillsborough County, had extensive water damage due to Hurricane Irma. After power was restored and clean up efforts were underway, an electrical fire destroyed the 106-year-old school building. As the district worked to find alternative classroom space for the more than 300 displaced students and staff, Lutz Preparatory charter school students and faculty kicked off a campaign to collect supplies and donations for them.
“Our students were excited to assist their fellow Hillsborough County Public School students who were impacted by this fire,” said Bonnie Guertin, Principal at Lutz Preparatory School. “We raised just over $1000 to purchase gift certificates for the teachers along with tons of supplies.”“Charter schools are part of a community’s fiber and have shown time again that they are good neighbors. The Lutz Preparatory family is a shining example of that,” said Lynn Norman-Teck, executive director of the Florida Charter School Alliance, a non-profit support and advocacy organization that works with charter schools across the state.
