18% of the Top 100 High Schools in Florida are Charter Schools

Every year, U.S. News & World Report evaluates high schools across the country and ranks them on six factors including college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth, and graduation rates. The data of nearly 24,000 public high schools were used to create the report that was released in April 2022.

The highlight of this year’s list is that while charter schools only make up 10% of all public schools in Florida, they make up 18% of the top 100 best high schools in the state. Two Florida charter schools, Archimedean Upper Conservatory Charter School and International Studies Charter High School (both in Miami-Dade County) rank among the top 100 high schools in the nation.

“Florida’s public charter schools continue to excel — increasing math and reading proficiency and raising graduation rates, especially among minority and low-income students,” said Lynn Norman-Teck, Executive Director of the Florida Charter School Alliance. “Thanks to the support from legislators, collaborative partnerships with businesses and municipalities, and vote of confidence from parents, charter schools have helped raise the achievement level in Florida and will continue to be a quality education choice program available to students regardless of their family’s income or zip code.”

For over two decades, public charter schools and their have played a fundamental role in our state’s system of K-12 public education. Their success is a testament to their commitment to the students and communities they serve.
