Homestead, FL — May 4, 2023 — Somerset Academy City Arts Conservatory recently earned Leader in Me Lighthouse Certification — a prestigious designation that confirms that the school has implemented leadership practices and skills that positively impact the entire school culture. Somerset Academy City Arts Conservatory, K-5, is the only school in Miami Dade County, and one of 650 schools worldwide, to have earned the Lighthouse Certification.
“The Lighthouse Certification means that as a school we are exemplars of the core paradigms of the Leader in Me program and 7 Habits. We are a beacon in our community for fostering student leadership, creating a leadership school culture, and aligning academic outcomes with the support of all our stakeholders,” said Idalia Suarez, Principal. “Through this journey, we have experienced incredible growth in our students and staff, academically and personally, as they have embraced the systems and paradigms of leadership. “Over the last 5 years, we have embarked on a journey to implement the Leader In Me process to empower students with the leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the 21st century.We would like to thank our Leader In Me coaches for guiding and supporting us through this journey, our staff for being the role models for our students, our families for supporting us and most importantly our students for using their voice and ownership to lead!”
According to the Leaders in Me website, “Lighthouse Certification comes as a result of implementing Leader in Mewith fidelity. Schools use a Lighthouse Rubric to measure outcomes in three areas: teaching leadership principles, creating a leadership culture, and aligning academic systems. Schools also measure their success as it relates to their unique school. Lighthouse Schools serve as exemplars to their community and other schools.” Leader in Me is an evidence-based learning program — developed in partnership with educators and based on the principles in Stephen Covey’s 1989 book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” The seven habits are used to encourage students to make their own decisions, be the best person that they can be and provides the tools to help them become self-sufficient leaders.” Attainting Lighthouse Certification shows that a school has integrated the principles of the Leader in Me program into the culture.
